Uses
A filbert paint brush is one of the most versatile brushes you can use to obtain an array of visual effects. The bristle shape is like a flat brush with the exception that the profile has a rounded edge. It is my favorite and most used brush in my work for a variety of reasons.
Firstly, the rounded edge allows you to spread paint around without generating a brush stroke created from the edge of the bristles. This effect is desired when painting in a blended underpainting.
Secondly, adding a wash, glaze, or an opaque highlight with the filbert brush creates soft edges and heightens realism. I am not saying that is impossible to use other types of brushes for these techniques, it just makes the task easier.
Thirdly, when painting feathers, the shape of a filbert is perfect for creating those little overlapping feather tip structures that can later be glazed or washed for exceptional realism.
Forth, the chiseled edge of the filbert allows you to use the edge of the brush to paint a relatively thin line.
